The Grand Union Canal - Stoke Bruerne to Wolverton.

Following the Canal through Stoke Bruerne and then wandering along the towpath to reach Wolverton.

This is a continuation from our Muscott Mill, Weedon, Blisworth Tunnel - The Grand Union Canal in England item.
Stoke Bruene drydocks, Grand Union Canal, England. When the Grand Union Canal reaches Stoke Bruerne you can expect the area to be quite busy - especially on a nice sunny spring or summer weekend when people on holiday tend to arrive. There is an interesting canal museum there and also a very large public house next to the canal bridge. The museum does have a car-park which at the time of our last visit enjoyed a parking charge of UKstg 2.50 - there are also toilets available next to the Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum - these toilets are only available whilst the museum is open.
The generally narrow and grass/dirt towpath along the canal passes under quite a few interesting old bridges - the condition of the towpath becomes wider and better surfaced from Cosgrove Locks on into Wolverton.

Cosgrove Horse Tunnel - The Old Stratford Cut and The Grand Union Canal.

Two of the photos shown above are where a "horse-size" short tunnel was built under the canal to allow access for the horses (which at one time were used to tow the canal barges) to get onto and off the towpath - there were originally several stables situated on both sides of the Grand Union Canal at Cosgrove.
Old Stratford Cut is situated beside Cosgrove Lock 21 - this where the Old Stratford and Buckingham Branch of the Grand Union Canal once made it's 10.5 mile journey to Buckingham Wharf. Apart from a short distance which is used for mooring the Branch no longer exists as a navigable waterway however there are plans to restore it.

These photos are of

The Great Ouse Aqueduct

- initially the Grand Union Canal was taken across the Ouse Valley by the use of 9 temporary locks but because of flooding in December 1799 a brick aqueduct was built instead - this opened for business in the Summer of 1805. A few months later part of the embankment collapsed followed some weeks later by the entire structure. In 1811 a cast iron trough which was held up on stone pillars and supported by long earth embankments was completed. Only one of the original locks remains - Cosgrove Lock 21 shown above. The Old Stratford Cut was opened in 1800 and went to several wharfs at Old Stratford - this cut was extended into Buckingham in 1801. The Arm was fully closed in 1964 and is now mostly destroyed however there is a plan to rebuild/re-open this 17 kilometre long Buckingham Canal Arm keeping to it's original line wherever possible.

derelict warehouses - Grand Union Canal at Wolverton

As the

Grand Union Canal arrives at Wolverton

it is lined with quite a few mostly derelict warehouses. The brickwork and shapes are really picturesque and the reflections in the canal are excellent - especially where the walls of the warehouses are covered with ivy and so on. How long these warehouses will survive before being condemned or just simply falling down is debateable - it would be nice if they could be converted and re-used whilst keeping their outward appearance.
The next section of the Grand Union is covered on our Wolverton to Soulbury 3 Locks on The Grand Union Canal topic.
