The Southern End of The Grand Union Canal - on down to Brentford in London.
The final stretch of The Grand Union Canal as it finally gets right into London and very nearly meets up with The River Thames.
The following is a continuation from our Cowley Peachey Junction to Hanwell Lock Flight - Grand Union Canal item.
"Nearly meets The Thames" is because The Grand Union Canal ends a few hundred yards before that river - with access to The River Thames (only for boats) achieved by continuing along the tidal River Brent.
The immediate area alongside the Canal remains quite sort of rural despite being so far into London and the still grass/dirt towpath is not that wide in places - so it can be quite muddy in wet weather. There are a couple of particularly nice railway bridges to look at on this final stretch but the road bridges are large heavy-looking steel and concrete affairs - necessary to cater for the heavy traffic which has to cross the canal.

The canal joins the River Thames at Kew
The London end of The Grand Union Canal at Thames Lock, Brentford Gauging Locks and the tidal River Brent and River Thames.
Towards the end of the Grand Union Canal Main Line starting from Brentford Gauging Locks and on down to the River Thames the canal** is affected by tides and therefore boaters should consider the amount of headroom during a rising tide. Thames Lock itself has a permanent Lock Keeper and the lock can only be used at certain times The phone number to contact British Waterways lock-keepers is on 020 8568 2779.**The Grand Union Canal officially ends it's long journey from Birmingham at Thames Locks. The remaining few hundred yards of waterway making a navigable connection to the River Thames (oppostie Kew) is actually on the River Brent.
